Numerous studies have indicated that time-dependent subcritical crack growth, at elevated temperatures, in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) is caused by a number of mechanisms. The most commonly observed crack growth mechanisms will be described. The results of an investigation of the conditions in which each mechanism controls the rate of subcritical crack growth will be used to construct failure mechanism maps. The failure mechanism maps illustrate regions of temperature and oxygen concentration where each crack growth mechanism operates.
