To perform complex tasks, humans are required to handle multiple sensory stimuli, encode information, and make decisions. Humans have limited cognitive resources, resulting in cognitive bottlenecks that hinder performance (Schmorrow et al., 2008). The field of Augmented Cognition (AugCog) aims to “transform human-computer interaction by making systems adapt to changing [user] capabilities” by coupling neurophysiological sensing and cognitive modeling (St. John et al., 2004, p. 131).This study focuses on the executive function (EF) cognitive bottleneck. The three EF processes (updating, shifting, and inhibiting) control all other cognitive processes for execution of goal direct behavior (Baddeley, 1996). Simple tasks are used to investigate these EF processes separately.
