As ocean energy systems continue to be tested and improved, coastal communities and thernelectrical energy industry are increasingly expressing interest in developing commercialrnprojects. Recently, an analysis to identify available ocean energy resources for a remoterncoastal city, King Cove, Alaska, was undertaken. An approach to assess potential project sitesrnwas employed to minimize effort and time dedicated to the assessment of ocean energyrnresources. The ongoing analysis for the City of King Cove is presented as an example of thernproposed method.rnThe first step is to identify project goals followed by a preliminary-level assessment of availablernocean energy resources to identify which systems, if any, might provide substantial powerrngenerating capacity. A preliminary look into potential environmental impact and permittingrnissues follows assessment of available power. The environmental permitting process for oceanrnenergy systems is still developing, but regardless of the final standard achieved, environmentalrnimpacts will likely control future projects. Finally, each assessed location is analyzed forrnsuitability with respect to available power, environmental restrictions, and many other factors.rnWhile these analyses are not intended to comprehensively address all issues, it will better refinernour understanding of critical items that warrant further investigation as the project movesrnforward. Similar studies can be performed quickly and generate information to evaluate projectrnviability and guide detailed analyses, permitting, design and construction.
