In order to remain competitive, hydro power plants aged twenty or more years should bernmodernized. The aim should be to replace original parts, assemblies, or systems withrnmodern ones in order to become more competitive. With these changes the end resultsrnshould be increments in capacity and availability and reductions in costs. All equipmentsrnand facilities in the energy chain at the power plant should be evaluated for changes. Onernof them is the electric power generator stator. It is there where the mechanical energyrnprovided by turbine shaft is transformed into electrical energy. Two are the main possiblernchanges when upgrading the generator stator. One is to replace existing coils with newrncoils having a larger copper cross section and modern insulating materials. Another is tornreplace existing core with a new core made of low loss magnetic steel. The generatorrnrotor may remain the same even if the reluctance of the generator magnetic circuitrnchanges a little after modernization. In any case, proposals of change including arnfeasibility analysis should be presented to higher management for approval. This Paperrnshows the basic information O&M engineers need to identify electric power generatorsrnwith potential for stator upgrading. This information is to be obtained from the analysisrnactual construction and basic electromagnetic and mechanical design calculations.rnParticular attention is given to the stacking of the core. It is concluded that a siterncontinuous stacking results in a better and trouble free core than one stacked in sectors atrnthe factory. The case of upgrading two stators from 180 to 211 MVA is used to illustraternthe process.
