Formed as an abstract sculptural representation of the Mapungubwe Hill, the Mapungubwe building is the showcase for the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria which is currently under construction. This iconic, statuesque structure towers 17 m above the transfer slab upon which it is situated. The angular, vault-like walls range between 75 and 90 degrees, and the roof consists of sloping concrete panels at angles up to 31 degrees. This paper outlines the construction process in order to strike an ideal balance between the constructability, degree of accuracy and cost-efficiency of the project, whilst maintaining the structural and architectural requirements. This structure advertises to the world how innovative construction techniques can assist in creating definitive architecture that brings a world class approach to a uniquely African subject.
