The current planning basis for the availability of a deep repository for the disposal of intermediate and some low level waste in the UK is around 2040. This means that waste arisings must be suitably conditioned and packaged for at least the interim storage period prior to this time and for the operating period of a repository prior to its closure. The paper will discuss assessment principles to ensure package integrity including: 1. Storage and handling during manufacture 2. Conditions during transfer 3. Consideration of container surface treatments and finishes 4. Waste package handling during use 5. Interim storage environmental conditions 6. Monitoring during interim storage.
