Case history is presented for 304L stainless steel piping system in a desalination water plant.rn304L SS elbows, transporting incoming sea water and out coming salted brines, are fittedrnwith Victaulic joints to a reverse osmosis membrane bodies. Morphology of this kind ofrnfittings, combined with working pressure, allow seawater and brines to be in contact with thernexternal surface of different SS pipes at their edges.rnExperience demonstrated that when Victaulic joints are uncoated they electrically bridge thernelbows, so same potentials can be observed in all parts of the metallic piping system. Underrnthis configuration no major corrosion appeared on SS piping for more than five years. In thisrncase corrosion only affected, not severely, the body of the joint made by carbon steel. Forrnaesthetic reasons, to avoid rusting appearance, this kind of fittings were organically coated inrnone of the reverse osmosis frame. This improvement causes electrical isolation of elbowsrnwith the rest of the piping system. Rubber gaskets inside the joint in contact with externalrnpart of the SS pipes also creates a little rim with lack of oxygen. In consequence, becausernseawater and brines can reach external part of the SS pipes, inside the Victaulic joint body,rncrevice corrosion appeared under rubber gaskets and accelerated rapidly. Major crevicerncorrosion of SS developed in no more than six months after the improvement at the externalrnpart of the SS pipe edges, causing potential breakdowns of the system. Meanwhile, otherrnframes with uncoated Victaulic joints rested without appreciable corrosion at the SS pipes.rnThe aim of this work is to describe the actions done to analyse the corrosion causes, tornpropose solutions, and also to warn engineers about how corrosion is always present, andrnmust keep in mind when designing or modifying an existing piping system. Aestheticrnperformance can always result in major expenditures and new undesired problems if they arerncorrosion related.
