The paper describes the design and performance of IDES, a Javanbased distributed simulation engine being developed at Sandia NationalnLaboratories. The feasibility of using Java is demonstrated by achievingnorder of magnitude speedup gains, on a model with three quarters of anmillion simulated entities, on an “off-the-shelf” system ofn56 PentiumPro processors
