The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is an accredited standard of competence for computer users. It is a certificate awarded to a person on passing one theoretical test and six practice-based tests using a personal computer and common computer applications. This paper describes how the idea of a computer driving licence was initiated, and the current status of the ECDL/ICDL from two points of view: the development of the market and the development of the product.
