During an Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) test, there isrnoften concern not only about the displacements that occurrnduring operation, but also about the stress or strain levelsrnthat are being encountered. If in-plane vibration werernmeasured, then strain could be estimated as the change inrndisplacement between two transducers divided by the distancernbetween them. Unfortunately, vibration is usuallyrnmeasured normal to the surface instead of in-plane, so stressrnor strain cannot be calculated from this data.rnHowever, if a finite element model is used in conjunctionrnwith ODS test data, the model can be deformed using thernmeasured data and the appropriate stresses, strains and evenrnapplied forces can be calculated. Details of this method andrnseveral practical examples of its use are included in thisrnpaper.
