The instability of an over-hung flexible rotor partiallyrnfilled with fluid is experimentally studied. Morernattentions were paid on the developing process of thernunstable motion, the dynamical behavior of the rotorrnsystem during the instability occurs, and the whirlingrncharacteristics of the rotor system within the unstablernspeed region. The effect of the fluid-filled ratio on thernwhirling frequency, the unstable region and the rotorrnvibration amplitude are also dealt with. It is shown thatrnthe rotor system in the unstable region of rotationalrnspeeds does not whirl at either a constant speed or therncritical speed of the empty rotor system. The whirlingrnfrequency of the rotor system in the unstable regionrndepends on not only the rotational speed, but also thernvolume of the fluid filled in the chamber. The unstablernmotion characterized by the sub-synchronous forwardrnmotion occurs when the rotational speed is just overrnthe critical speed of the rotor system fully filled with thernfluid.
