Propeller pumps are the most sensitive type ofrnpumps with respect to flow conditions at the inlet.rnThe flow at the inlet should be uniform and steady.rnAlso, it should be without swirl, vortices andrnentrained air. Flow conditions at the pump intakernare established in the approach-flow region, where,rninlet, fore bay and sump are three significant zones.rnThe design recommendations provide limits forrnoperation levels to ensure not only the operationrnrequirements but also to avoid the dynamicrninsatiability for the pumping stations. In this paper,rnthe effect of water level change in the upstream sidernon dynamic behavior of the pumping station isrnstudied. Critical water level at the pump intake isrnwell determined to avoid dynamic instability. Also,rnthe dynamic characteristics at these conditions arernassessed at one of the main pumping stations inrnEgypt. The results indicated that the minimumrnrequired submergence of the pump inlet could berndetected by measuring vibration amplitudes andrndoing frequency analysis. Decrease the water levelrnwill induce vortices swirl flow at the pump inletrnresulting to severe vibration at non-harmonic highrnfrequencies. Increase water level at the pumprnintake improves dynamic behavior, avoids anyrnsudden breakdown or failure of the pumping station,rnand decrease maintenance and replacement costs.
