Modal analysis has become a widely applied toolrnfor understanding complex energy concentrationsrnand dispersions in materials and structures. Thernpurposes of modal analysis include but are notrnlimited to designs for noise suppression,rndiagnosis of dynamic vehicle performance,rnmeasurement of structural responses tornpotentially destructive excitations (impulses),rnstress analysis for system components, andrnstructural health and prognostic measurements.rnRequirements for large numbers of sensors,rnlimits on the mass of the sensors so as not torn"load" or "damp" the test article, and support andrnsecurity of the interconnecting wires which, if notrnsecured, will add "noise" modes to the test article.rnMost existing sensors must be connected tornpower and signal by wire. Much effort isrnexpended dealing with the limitations of wire.rnThe purpose of this paper is to examine thernpotential for wireless sensor and data acquisitionrnmethods to mitigate some of the inherentrnproblems associated with experimental modalrnanalysis as it is currently performed with "hardrnwire" technology. Approaches to wirelessrnhardware and software are suggested that couldrnparallel calculations and thus reduce calculationrntime and improve data quality by elimination ofrninterconnecting wires.
