In the late 1990's, fueled by soaring stock market profits and investors looking for the next big win, start up cash was easily obtained for this exciting new industry that offered the promise of clean, more efficient and lower cost energy with excellent profit for those who could succeed. Many of the stack developers were new startups whose enthusiasm and optimism were extremely high and led to overly ambitious plans for commercialization that went unfulfilled as the technology improvements needed to satisfy commercialization could not live up to their ambitious forecasts. This caused a number of thermoset suppliers, who had invested their development time, to quit seeking the opportunity as obstacles including safe hydrogen storage and delivery, the lack of a hydrogen infrastructure, efficiently reforming fossil fuels to generate hydrogen and the early inability of this technology to compete on an effective cost per kilowatt basis with the traditional forms of electricity generation, seemed insurmountable. The few thermoset material manufacturers and thermoset part producers who have continued to bet on the technology stand to be rewarded. Good signs of commercialization are there. The stack builders who have made it this far are cautioned by their earlier optimism, so forecasts are now more reliable. Fueled by federal and state government matching grants, investment money is still there too.
