The purpose of this paper is to sketch a generalrninterdisciplinary research effort in information retrieval which would take into account the methodologies, formalisms, and/or findings from natural language processing and linguistic theory. The basic assumptions and approaches to language analysis within the three fields are discussed; the utility of the lessons and findings within natural language processing and linguistic theory for information retrieval are assessed; and a general procedure is advanced for asking both basic research and applications questions within information retrieval which might incorporate elements of natural language processing and linguistic theory. It is suggested that this research endeavor is consistent with the need to understand the linguistic characteristics of retrieval system representations and for producing portable, robust information retrieval systems.
