摘要

The history of encyclopedias and visions of "wholly new forms of encyclopedias" are briefly reviewed. The possibilities and problems that hypertext presents as a basis for new forms of encyclopedias are then explored. The capabilities of current systems, both experimental and commercially available, are outlined, focusing on new possibilities for authoring and design and for reading and retrieval. Examples of applications already making use of hypertext are given. In addition, some of the problems associated with the design of hypertext systems are identified, particularly those for which librarians and information scientists may be able to offer some solutions.
