It is a very great pleasure for me to be with you here today, evocative of my exciting years as President of FID, working with that great pioneer of documentation. Donker Duyvis. Furthermore I am particularly happy that the meeting is taking place in Finland, a country with which I have has many associations since as long ago as 1929.rnThe world has changed greatly since my days as President of FID. It is generally supposed that we are entering an "information society", a phase in the evolution of human society as distinct from the industrial society which preceeded it, ushered in by the Industrial Revolution, as was that from the earlier agrarian period. In the 1950s, we of FID had some inkling that great changes were on the horizon and indeed this was implicit in the long term plan for FID which I compiled before my departure, but we had little sense of the speed with which the information era was approaching, of the profundity of the changes or of the important part which microelectronics, then a tentative application of solid state physics was to play in the development.
