One of the main safety concerns in xEVs is the thermal runaway of the Li-Ion batteries. It can be triggered by (local) overheating. In this presentation we will show, how different triggers affect the thermal runaway reaction of large automotive Li-Ion cells. We will compare the temperatures and the gas-emission rate of thermal runaway reactions caused by hot-spots and by uniform heating. The gas-emission and temperature dependancy of thermal runaway behavior of large Li-ion cells is not yet described in the literature. The presentation will show real world measurements on how different types of over-temperature cause full thermal runaway and venting of automotive Li-Ion cells. The presentation will help to judge risk and outcome of thermal runaway. What is the worst-case thermal ruanway scenario?
