Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of NaxCoy0z Cathode Additives for Na-Ion Batteries

Na-ion battery(NIB) has cost effectiveness and extensive geographical distribution of Na source. However the cell potential is lower than LIB. Furthermore, current NIBs adapt a hard carbon as an anode active material to ensure the reversibility of electrochemical cycle. At very early cycles, some amount of the extracted Na+ from the cathode could not be moved back into cathode, which is ended up to decrease of cell capacity. In this work, synthesized Na[x]Co[y]0[z] as cathode additive is applied to supply the extra Na+ which is able to compensate the initial capacity loss of NIB induced by the anode. Through evaluation of physical/electrochemical properties, one of them was selected as the best optimized material. By applying the material to cathode, the reversible cell capacity is increased in full cells with the hard carbon as the anode.
