The bulk materials designed for today's leading lithium-ion batteries suffer from degradation that results in poor performance and short lifetime. Application of atomic layer deposition (ALD) to current bulk materials such as cathode, anode, and separators can upgrade their performance and safety beyond industry established metrics. While the benefits of ALD have been widely demonstrated over the past few decades the technology has been considered dead among industry due to its lack of scale and prohibitive costs. Forge Nano has recently demonstrated that ALD is a scalable process and developed systems capable of over 1000 tons per year of ALD-enabled materials, enabling great technological benefit at very low cost.
