This paper examines data for management within the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) preparedness management system. Data for management presents a significant challenge, and in this paper we explore some of the issues that need to be addressed before a future RAN preparedness management system is architected to achieve quantitative and objective cost/capability decisions.rnWe examine how data is exchanged in the management process, the operational view of the preparedness management system and the nature of the data used in the management process. Within the context of the nature of data, we examine a classification of data that may be used to represent its contribution to the management processes. This classification of data provides a basis for a brief discussion of the significant issues that need to be addressed in the architecting process of data for management.
