London’s heritage includes many structures that are over 150 years old. Maintaining the historicrnfabric while meeting modern service demands is always a challenge. The award of the Olympicrnand Paralympic Games to London for 2012 has led to a major regeneration of Stratford in EastrnLondon. A new underpass (U02) was built to provide a main southern vehicle access into thernOlympic Park. The access affected the Great Eastern Rail (GER) line to Liverpool Street and thernNorthern Outfall Sewer (NOS) neither of which could practicably be rerouted.rnThis underpass runs directly below the NOS Pudding Mill Lane bridge eastern spans and requiredrn3.5m depth of excavation to provide headroom to current standards. By using both new and triedrnand tested methods, it proved possible to preserve the stability of the bridge during construction andrnfind a way to extend its life.
