With data collected from analysing the design of 50 recent European vehicles, we reviewedrnvarious automotive applications, for which casting is in competition with other processes.rnThe parts concerned include crankshafts, camshafts, intake manifolds, valve covers, exhaustrnmanifolds, connecting rods, and so on.rnFor each application, the different processes and products that compete with casting, such asrnforging, or stamping of steel, injection of plastics etc, are described and illustrated.rnSome examples of substitution are highlighted and a quantitative state of the art of processes inrncompetition with casting is provided.rnFinally, we supply technological trends for some applications.
