The paper will review developments with particle reinforced aluminium alloys to achievernperformance and weight benefits for transport applications. An outline of key requirements forrnStructural Aerospace and Automotive Power Train applications will be related to the mechanicalrnproperties of the metal composite materials. The paper will highlight the significant weightrnsaving opportunities that can be realised from improvements in fatigue strength and modulus. Itrnwill also establish the importance of practical net shape fabrication and finishing techniques tornallow manufacture of components.
