Fire protection in commercial or passenger aircrafts is a complex and veryrnimportant issue. Currently used scattered light detectors, which detect smokernparticles, do not live up to the reliability standards requested by airlines andrnauthorities for long-haul flights over open water and arctic regions. Attempting tornarrive at reduced false-alarm rates, multi-criteria fire detectors are being developed.rnIn addition to smoke particles such multi-criteria detectors also detect reactive gasesrnthat are emitted by smoldering fires. The present paper reviews some of the recentrndevelopments that have been carried into this direction.
