The objective of this work is to present the applicability of a recent formulated methodology forrnnon-linear analysis of composite materials to long fibre reinforced laminates (and structures madernof them) proposed by the automotive industry [1].rnThe methodology recently developed by the authors [2,3] is able to analyze the material non-linearrnbehaviour of composite laminates constituted by a matrix reinforced with unidirectionalrnlong fibres. This methodology is based on the use of constitutive laws for the componentrnmaterials jointly with ‘closure equations’ taken into account the composite morphology. Eachrnphase (matrix, fibres) is modelled individually using an appropriate continuum constitutive lawrn(elastic, elasto-plastic, damage, etc.) while the global response is obtained from all phasesrncontributions considering the interactions between components.rnThis approach has been implemented in a general-purpose finite element code (COMET) [4] andrna user-friendly interface for composite material data input in a pre-post processing module (GiD)rn[5] has been developed.rnAnalysis of long fibre (carbon, glass and hybrid) reinforced laminates (with epoxy matrix)rnproposed by the automotive industry in a recent concluded research project [1] are used to showrnthe relevance of this technology. Numerical results are compared with experimental onesrnperformed on material samples at Institute for Static and Dynamics (ISD), University of Stuttgart,rnand at Dipartimento di Meccanica, Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) on structural parts (compositerntubular joints) provided by ITALDESIGN – GIUGIARO.
