US 54 is the principal east-west route running through the heart of Wichita, Kansas. On the east side of town, US 54 is a 4-lane, urban, divided highway which intersects a multitude of north-south arterials connecting large industrial facilities generating heavy traffic volumes. These intersections are at-grade, causing disturbances in the already turbulent flow on the highway. Traffic projections indicate that the demand on this route will continue to grow even though US 54 is already nearing failure. The City has determined that the route should be upgraded to operate as a 6-lane freeway system with parallel frontage roads, much as it does through the rest of the city. One primary challenge associated with this transition is modifying the current interchange of US 54 at 1-35, the Kansas Turnpike. A new interchange needs to provide access between the Turnpike, the US 54 mainline and the new frontage roads. However, the close proximity of the Turnpike access point to the Webb Road interchange creates a complex, high traffic volume condition that is not easily resolved with traditional methods.rnThis report focuses on several of the concepts evaluated including a roundabout interchange to serve the Turnpike access. Other alternatives included signalized control and a scenario without direct access to the Turnpike for some movements. Comparative evaluation of these concepts was difficult due to the significant differences in traffic control and travel patterns. The benefits and limitations of using VISSIM are also presented herein.
