The City of Tucson has installed 85 HAWK pedestrian signals. Many of the more recent signals have been funded by the Regional Transportation Authority and are installed at school crossings. Planning for HAWK pedestrian crossings includes prioritizing locations for HAWK crossings, conducting studies, and other criteria for locating HAWKs. Issues with bicycles using HAWK crossings are discussed. Construction issues include signal and controller equipment, signing and striping, and interval timing. Variations on the HAWK are discussed, including the combined fire/pedestrian beacons, PUFFINs, School HAWKs, and split-phase HAWKs.
