The Phoenix region, as one of the fastest growing metropolitans in the nation, has required aggressive enhancement of the regional transportation infrastructure. Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), as Phoenix region's designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), monitors traffic growth, congestion patterns and mobility trends closely through a variety of data survey practices and new technologies.rnThe goals and objectives of traffic monitoring have evolved and are now more dynamic than static. The paper reveals the current MAG data collection program, followed by data management applications. One example is to manage GPS travel time and speed data using a Geographic Information System (GIS) Linear Referencing System (LRS). The abundance of data allows professionals to conduct in-depth mobility analysis such as travel time contours, optimal routing and mobility trends. This is only feasible with the help of the LRS that brings various datasets into a single platform. Another example is MAG regional traffic counts retrieval system. The overall concept is not only to warehouse all regional traffic counts collected by different agencies on one system, but also to achieve the goals of agencies to manage their own data remotely and to make it interactively viewable by the public. MAG has developed new methodologies in traffic monitoring within the region and has been active to explore and embrace potential opportunities to ameliorate its regional traffic monitoring program. This has led to innovative technologies to generate a new dimension in traffic data collection and survey.
