Various architectures are under consideration for future telephony networks. Some of these involve placing equipment with traffic dependant power consumption into the customer access network. Two options are available for powering this equipment: design to meet the maximum possible load, or design for a lesser load and accept the failures which occur when powering limits are exceeded.rnDue to the large power reductions which can be achieved with only a small probability of failure, designing to permit failures may be preferable in some cases. This paper outlines teletraffic modelling techniques which can be used to analyse the relationship between power, traffic and service as seen by the customer. These techniques are illustrated with reference to a "hybrid fibre coax" network example, and may also be applied to other architectures such as fibre to the curb.
