Optical techniques are very suitable for geometric measurements of three-dimensional surface shapes. The advantages are absence of contact, large number of measurement points and high speed. Classical topometric methods, like fringe projection, measure the specimen shape by analyzing the obliquely projected fringe pattern on the specimen surface. Classical photogrametric techniques combine the images from two cameras and use triangulation. Recently some optical shape measurement techniques have been combined. Topometric techniques together with photogrametric techniques form the so-called "topogrametry". As a result, the neasurement accuracy can be significantly improved.
