Abstract: Interferometers are used for routinely testing opticalcomponents and in engineering for the measurement ofmechanical and thermal behavior of materials andcomponents. Conventionally, for the most accuratemeasurements these interferometer systems areconstructed from high-quality optical elements andinclude fine controls for precise alignment. In thisnew approach, all the errors of a poor quality,misaligned system are accepted then eliminated by asimple digital subtraction process. The method offersthe possibility of devising very large aperture opticalsystems for traditional and engineering interferometersfrom inexpensive and basic components.!8
