THE TEST AND EVALUATION CHALLENGES OF INTERNAL WEAPON CARRIAGE

With a move towards increasing the stealth characteristics of combat aircraft has come a renewed interest in the internal carriage of weapons. This paper looks at the numerous test and evaluation (T&E) challenges that such projects will pose. T&E is conducted to ensure that a product is both capable of doing what is required of it, and also that it can do it to an acceptable level of safety. Increasingly, modelling and simulation techniques (M&S) are being used, in place of physical trials, to prove system capabilities. However, the M&S tools still require validation to ensure that their output accurately reflects real-world behaviour and it is in the validation of M&S results that physical trials are still required. Internal weapon carriage involves exposing stores to an environment, both thermal and vibration, that is often markedly different to that experienced during external carriage. T&E must prove that the carriage and release of stores in such environments does not compromise aircraft safety. It must also show that personnel are able to work safely within the confines of weapon bays. The UK has only one aircraft currently in-service with a bomb bay – Nimrod MR2. Therefore, experience of internal weapon carriage T&E is sparse and, although QinetiQ Boscombe Down has large amounts of data from trials involving Canberra, Buccaneer, Vulcan etc, the vast majority of personnel with experience and knowledge of such T&E have long since departed. Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) will bring a weapons bay into RAF and RN service. Recognising the need to minimise costs, the JSF project will not have any Ukspecific T&E. Instead, UK T&E requirements have been fully absorbed within the JSF T&E programme and UK T&E personnel are integrated in to the JSF T&E Integrated Test Force.
