Fuzzy Approach to Optimum Response Selection in Construction Project Risks

Due to presence of risks and uncertainties, inherent in different stages of projects development, many construction projects are failed to achieve the predefined objectives in terms of time, cost and quality. Incorporating the risk management concepts into construction practice may enhance the performance of project by taking appropriate responses in facing with risks. Different response scenarios may be defined to be implemented against risks. Response scenarios are classified into four categories, including risk avoidance, risk transfer, risk mitigation, and risk acceptance This research proposes a methodology for evaluation of different alternative response scenarios to the identified risks based on their consequences in terms of their effect on project cost, project duration and project quality. To take into account uncertainty inherent in evaluation of consequences of different response scenarios, a fuzzy insight into the optimum response selection process is used so as to provide more tangible model of the evaluation process. Proposed fuzzy method is indeed a multi criteria decision making model, based on the set of criteria assigned for the evaluation procedure. To be more informative, a practical example is conducted, based on the opinion of a group of experts.
