A brief review on the application of Micromechanics and Fracture Mechanics in the development of superconducting magnet systems for Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanners being widely used in hospitals.A system of superconducting magnet designed to generate a strong,uniform and stable magnetic field is the heart of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner and it consists of several superconducting coils and their support structures within a cryostat.It is a complex multi-physics system where the magnetic,mechanical and thermal behaviours are coupled together interacting with each other.Micromechanics and Fracture Mechanics play an important role in understanding the behaviour of a superconducting magnet.In this paper,we briefly review the following three topics: (1) the magnetic,mechanical and thermal coupling of a superconducting magnet system; (2) the orthotropic effective properties of superconducting coils at cryogenic temperature; (3) the quench phenomenon due to heating generated by cracking or friction; and (4) the cryostat design and fatigue.
