A series of power units with RBMK-1000reactors are in operation in Russia. The specifiedservice life of the earliest power units is close to itsend. In this connection, work has been started toextend their service life.The main non-replaceable RBMK componentsare support metal structures and the graphite stack.Therefore, estimating their residual life is a key aspectof the reactor facility life extension.The lead reactor for all RBMK reactors is thatof Leningrad NPP Unit 1. A complex of activitiesperformed at the reactor included in-pile examinationand materials studies of surveillance specimens andthe specimens cut from equipment. These andcomputational studies have shown that the metalstructures and the graphite stack are capable of beingoperate for up to 45 years with regard for periodicinspections of their state.
