A multi-angle analysis on development of modern peri-urban agricultural areas in China: A case study of Beijing

摘要

Modern peri-urban agricultural areas play a unique role in urban expansion, environment conservation, and socio-economic sustainable development. In this paper, theoretical and methodological issues that shape the development of peri-urban agricultural areas were discussed. Researches on the complex peri-urban spatial system can provide a scientific and philosophical framework for guiding the development of modern peri-urban agricultural areas. The integration of urban planning and land planning and the utilization of novel indicator systems for evaluating development and spatial planning allows optimization of development plans for modern peri-urban agricultural areas. Theories and specific analysis approaches for modern peri-urban agricultural areas in Beijing were also discussed, including the multi-functional theory, the principal component analysis (PCA) method, the fractal analysis method and optimization models. The present development and spatial evolution characteristics of peri-urban agricultural area in Beijing are further clarified using these methods. Finally, the development processes and the spatial differences of the peri-urban agricultural area in Beijing were evaluated.
