The evaluation of the brittle crack arrest toughness value (K_(ca)) and thedevelopment of the brittle crack arrest method for the welded joint ofshipbuilding steel plate were experimentally conducted. Steel plateswith 80mm thickness were used and two welding processes, which areflux cored arc welding (FCAW) process only and combined weldingprocess (EGW+FCAW), were used to produce full thickness weldjoints. Temperature gradient ESSO test was performed to measure Kcaof the welded joints. To develop the brittle crack arrest method, actualstructural specimens were utilized to conduct ESSO test at -10℃uniform temperature. According to the experimental results of crackarrestability investigation of thick shipbuilding steel plates, the arresterhole design for the welded joint is very effective to arrest the brittlecrack without shifting the block.
