Tissue-specific distribution of BDE209 metabolites, including debrominated polybrominated diphenyl ethers and methoxylated brominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-BDEs) were analyzed in muscle, liver and blood of rainbow trout. Rainbow trout was exposed to BDE209 via a single intraperitoneal injection (about 500ng/g wet weight) for 28 days. The results showed that the BDE209 metabolite distribution varied in different fish tissues. As for BDE209 itself, the relatively higher concentrations were detected in muscles, from 7841.15 ng/g dry weight on day 1 to 2748.56 ng/g dry weight on day 28. BDE209 concentrations in livers were much lower than in muscles, day 1 (mean=227.99ng/g wet weight) and day 28 (mean= 236.39ng/g wet weight), respectively. Nevertheless, BDE209 was not detected in blood at both sampling times. There existed obvious differences of BDE and MeO-BDE distribution in different fish tissues. As for the debrominated BDE metabolites, the main debrominated BDE metabolites in muscle were tetra-, penta- and nona-BDEs. While in liver, the debrominated metabolites composed of mono-, di-, hepta-, octa- and nona-BDEs. However in blood, only mono-, di-, and tetra-BDEs were observed during the exposure. Regarding the MeO-BDE metabolites, totally seven MeO-BDE metabolites were observed among different fish tissues. Individual MeO-BDE congeners in different tissues all presented an increase trend during the whole exposure period, with the most detection rate occurring in blood. In summary, BDE209 preferred to remain in muscle of rainbow trout, furthermore, BDE209 and its higher brominated diphenyl ether metabolites were more stable in muscle than in liver and blood of rainbow trout. However, BDE209 tended to degrade quickly into lower BDEs and MeO-BDEs in blood of rainbow trout.
