Currently, the aggressive research and development of large scale advanced batteries for HEVs or FCVs are conducted in the many organizations. And also, the commercialization of HEVs will be accelerated for the purpose of fuel consumption saving and for the reduction of carbon dioxide. Therefore, the cost performance of advanced batteries will be pursued moreover. Battery technology is forecast to make greater progress, which will be achieved through fundamental research and system development carried out around the world. However, the most fundamental aspect for the achievement of this is the need for cooperation between automobile companies, battery companies and material suppliers. Of course, there are no batteries that will satisfy the desirable targets in the initial stage. What is important is cooperating in achieving the desirable function and cost. In other words, a partner-type relationship is of prime importance. As progress is made, intellectual property rights will become increasingly important, and then the patent competition and licensing will become more active throughout the world.
