摘要

The real time monitoring of the state of charge is essential for an efficient battery management system. In lead-acid batteries, the sulphuric acid concentration in the electrolyte changes according to the state of charge. Because of this, if one of the concentration properties (density) is known, we can determinate, along with others variables, the battery state of charge. In this paper we report on the experimental results of an intrinsic density sensor based on a POF (polymer optical fiber) developed and tested in the lab. The fiber resistance to aggressive liquids like the lead acid battery electrolyte, in combination with a low cost and the easy of placing it inside the battery allow the implementation of this sensor for real time density measurements in lead acid batteries.
