Such is the concern about future effects of greenhouse gases that the U.S. Department of Energy is encouraging industry to produce a fuel-cell car of the future, the Freedom Car, running on hydrogen. Although the technology is advancing rapidly, the fuel cell is very expensive and lacks durability and reliability. The required infrastructure to supply hydrogen instead of gasoline or diesel fuel will be extremely expensive. For these reasons the Freedom Car is acknowledged to be many years away. The fuel-cell car is an electric car running on electricity produced by the fuel cell from a supply of hydrogen carried in the vehicle. Because hydrogen is difficult to store, the range of the car is projected as only 150 miles.
