Yardney Technical Products, Inc. under NAVSEA contract N00164-03-D-6923, has designed and delivered the world's largest Lithium ion (Li-ion) battery as the primary power source for the US Navy's Advanced SEAL Delivery System, ASDS. The ASDS is a state of the art submersible designed to transport US Navy SEALs. This 8-ton, 300V, 1,200,000 WattHour Li-ion battery with complete control electronics was delivered in July 2005 and has met or exceeded all operational requirements to date. The modular design approach is easily adapted to capacities as low as 10kWh. This battery replaced a battery of a different vendor/chemistry, which had experienced numerous problems and limited performance. The Li-ion system design was based on a scaled-up version of Yardney's other true prismatic cells, most notably the Mars Exploration Rover Li-ion cells, the B2 Bomber Li-ion cells and the 200Ah cells developed for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). This paper reviews numerous design and safety features necessary for the successful deployment and operation of any large Li-ion battery, whether for military or commercial applications.
