During the past decade, column flotation cells have become widely accepted for the upgrading ofrnfine coal streams. This popularity can be largely attributed to the ability of columns to removernhigh-ash clays from the froth product via the addition of wash water to a relatively deep froth.rnWhile there are hundreds of successful installations of column flotation cells for the upgrading ofrnfine coal, discussions with both end users and engineering firms have identified design issuesrnthat can make these installations challenging. The greatest of these challenges is the overall sizernof the cells and the associated foundation loads. To address this problem, full-scale plantrnevaluations of a new flotation system known as the StackCellTM has been undertaken. Thisrntechnology makes use of a pre-aerated high-shear feed canister that provides efficient bubbleparticlerncontacting, thereby substantially shortening the residence time required for coalrncollection and virtually eliminating most of the column height. This article (ⅰ) reviews the basicrndesign features of this innovative technology, (ⅱ) presents recent data obtained from pilot-plantrnand full-scale field trials, and (ⅲ) provides recommended guidelines for installation, operationrnand maintenance in commercial applications.
