The performance of stay cables was investigated using 1:1 sectional model wind tunnel tests under smooth flow conditions. Sections of soiled smooth cables of representative diameters were initially tested to identify the maximum rain-wind induced responses. Different surface configurations were then applied to the cables and tested again. Drag coefficient tests were carried out to ensure their compliance with the design assumptions and requirements. Damping tests were also carried out to find out their effectiveness in reducing rain-wind induced vibrations.
