To determine its feasibility, practicality and economic effects, this research project was conducted on increasing the individual compacted lift depths of Aggregate Base Course. The research project was conducted on the realignment of Secondary Road (SR) 1117 in Richmond County, North Carolina. At the direction of Vulcan Materials Company, and with approval and guidance from NCDOT, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., designed the 1.2-mile length of road with Aggregate Base Course lift depths greater than the 8" allowed under current NCDOT specifications. During placement of these increased depth lifts by the contractor, Highway Constructors, Inc., extensive testing and monitoring of the project was conducted by Vulcan Materials, Kimley-Horn, and the Materials and Test Unit of the NCDOT. The pavement design developed by Kimley-Horn required construction of sections of roadway with 10- and 12-inch depths of compacted Aggregate Base Course. With the approval of NCDOT, both of these sections of aggregate base material were placed in single lifts and compacted. Test results concluded that the 10- and 12-inch compacted lifts of aggregate base were successfully placed and compacted, and the required gradation, density, and moisture content were maintained throughout the entire depth of the compacted lift.
