摘要

Ballast degradation under track is primarily caused by the repeated loads of traffic. Current methods to determine this breakdown have sometimes been shown to be unreliable. To provide a more reliable indication of in-track performance of ballast materials, improved laboratory tests are needed which duplicate the loading conditions and which test the appropriate ballast material properties. The Mill Abrasion test is presently being evaluated by the railroad research community to determine if it provides a reliable and relevant measure of ballast material quality.
