Recent developments enable aggregate producers to institute and gain approval for quality control plans which can streamline their shipments and set them apart from their competitors. The cornerstone to a good quality control program is proper sampling. This involves establishing a sampling program that is both accurate and precise. Bulk materials are difficult to sample. Although proper manual sampling can be accomplished, it is labor intense and not easily accomplished in a production environment. A number of mechanical sampling devices for bulk materials have evolved over the past 50 years. Although they avoided many of the problems associated with manual sampling, early examples were often complicated and expensive while offering only questionable accuracy. The current state-of-the-art is based upon the sweep sampler design. When properly designed, installed & operated, sweep samplers offer accurate, reliable, and cost effective means of sampling for quality control from moving conveyors. The most logical extension of this technology is the addition of on-line size analysis using mechanical or vision based technology. Though a number of these installations currently exist, the market for them is still in the early stages of development. Once established in the eyes of the aggregate industry, an integrated sampling/analysis system could easily become a standard feature for modern operations.
