Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is used to evaluate the microcracking damage potential in sand asphalt mixtures. Microcracking has been shown to be associated with both fatigue cracking damage and the accumulation of permanent damage (rutting) under repeated compressive loading. Testing is performed at 25℃ in controlled-strain, torsional loading. Failure is defined as the transition point in the plot of normalized dynamic modulus (ratio of dynamic modulus at any time to the initial value of dynamic modulus at the first loading cycle) versus number of loading cycles. The transition point was judged to be the best general indicator of fatigue failure. DMA testing is able to clearly differentiate among the effects of various mineral fillers. It can be used as a screening tool to assess the cohesive strength properties and damage sensitivity of various mastics and to select asphalt filler combinations that optimize mastic properties and hence mixture properties.
