Ammonia in the condensate stripper off-gases (SOGs) that are incinerated in lime kilns can increase emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO_x). At the MeadWestvaco North Charleston Mill, the SOGs contain minor amounts (about 3%) of ammonia. We designed an ammonia-specific SOG scrubber that uses sulfuric acid addition, has few equilibrium stages and operates at elevated temperatures. The paper will present results of the ammonia scrubber process simulation, pilot plant, and full-scale engineering.
